Business Consultation - Caernarfon Gift Card Scheme

HWB Caernarfon is consulting with levy paying businesses about the possibility of introducing the Caernarfon Gift Card Scheme in the future.

The scheme would aim to:

• encourage more people to spend locally
• keep more money in Caernarfon's economy
• supporting town centre businesses
• promoting Caernarfon as a place to shop, eat, visit and enjoy

The potential scheme would be delivered through Miconex, the company that runs Town & City Gift Card schemes in a number of other towns, cities and BID areas.

The Caernarfon Gift Card would work as a prepaid Mastercard card. It would only be able to be spent at registered businesses, and would be accepted through the business's existing card machine as a normal Mastercard payment. No additional equipment would be required.

There would be no direct additional cost for your business to participate in the scheme. The scheme would be funded at least in part through HWB Caernarfon's annual BID levy, and we are also discussing the possibility of support or partnership with other organisations.

If your business already had its own gift card or voucher scheme, the Caernarfon Gift Card Scheme would not replace it. It would be an additional plan to help bring in additional spending for local businesses.

There are significant costs involved in setting up and running such a scheme. We currently estimate that the cost would be around £13,000 to launch and run the scheme in the first year, followed by around £8,500 a year thereafter.

Consultation with businesses is key before a decision can be made on the scheme. The Board will need to consider the level of support from businesses, how many businesses would be likely to register to participate, and the possibility of securing a financial contribution from other partners. If support is strong enough, the aim would be to launch the scheme during 2027/28.
